" RECONNECTIVE HEALING"
PROJECT PROPOSAL SITUATED IN EAST INDIA DOCK BASIN FOR A SANATORIUM. 2024.
PEOPLE WITH CHRONIC DESEASE WITH ONGOING AND SOMETIMES DEBILITATING SYMPTOMS CAN ERODE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND OTHER MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. DEPRESSION IS A CONDITION IN WHICH YOU FEEL SAD, HOPELESS, AND UNINTERESTED IN DAILY LIFE. MANY MEDICAL PROBLEMS CAN CREATE CHANGES IN YOUR BODY THAT CAUSE DEPRESSION. SOME EXAMPLES ARE HEART DISEASE, A STROKE, PARKINSON’S DISEASE, HORMONE PROBLEMS, AND CANCER.
THERE IS A LOT OF RESEARCH SHOWING THAT BEING EMBEDDED IN A SOCIAL NETWORK IS GOOD FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH AND PHYSICAL HEALTH. AND THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF REASONS FOR THAT. BEING INVOLVED IN RELATIONSHIPS MEANS THAT THERE IS SOMEONE TO NOTICE IF YOU ARE HAVING A PROBLEM, SOMEONE URGING YOU TO GO TO THE DOCTOR OR ENCOURAGING YOU TO EAT HEALTHY FOOD, SOMEONE DEPENDING ON YOU, WHICH MOTIVATES YOU TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, SOMEONE TO LISTEN TO YOU, SOMEONE TO DEPEND ON FOR ASSISTANCE. NOT EVERYONE HAS THIS IN THEIR LIVES, WHICH IS UNFORTUNATE, AS SOME LARGE-SCALE STUDIES HAVE EVEN LINKED SUCH RELATIONSHIPS WITH REDUCED MORTALITY.
SO WHEN FACED WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS, A PERSON WITH A HIGH SENSE OF CONTROL IS MORE LIKELY TO TAKE ACTIONS THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY INFLUENCE THE COURSE OF THEIR DISEASE — SUCH AS TAKING MEDICATION AND EXERCISING, AND SO ON.ITS ABOUT ACCEPTING WHAT YOU CAN’T CHANGE WHILE HAVING THE COURAGE TO CHANGE WHAT YOU CAN AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. AND THEN YOU MIGHT ASK, WHAT HAPPENS IF TREATMENT FAILS AND THE DISEASE COMES BACK?
THE PROPOSED SANATORIUM SHOULD BE A PLACE TO ESCAPE THE DAILY LIFE OF A PATIENT BUT AT THE SAME TIME CONFRONT THROUGH A SENSITIVE WAY INNER UNREST. IT SHOULD BE A CALM PLACE TO REST, RECHARGE, EXCHANGE AND FEEL THE NEEDS OF THE OWN BODY THROUGH A FOUR SENSES TREATMENT.
USER GROUPS AND THEIR IMPORTANCE TO THE HEALING INTENT
PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM CHRONIC DISEASE
THE PRIMARY USERS OF THE SANATORIUM ARE INDIVIDUALS DEALING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESSES. THEIR WELL-BEING IS AT THE HEART OF THIS PROJECT. CREATING A HEALING ENVIRONMENT THAT ALLEVIATES SYMPTOMS AND ENHANCES OVERALL HEALTH IS MY CORE INTENTION. MY DESIGN PRIORITIZES THEIR NEEDS, OFFERING THEM A SPACE THAT PROMOTES LONG-TERM RECOVERY AND A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE.
COMMUNITY OF ISLE OF DOGS
THE SANATORIUM ALSO CONSIDERS THE IMPACT ON THE LOCAL COMMUNITY OF ISLE OF DOGS. THIS PROJECT IS NOT ONLY A PLACE FOR HEALING BUT ALSO A CATALYST FOR POSITIVE CHANGE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. BY REPURPOSING LEFTOVER MATERIALS AND INCORPORATING SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES, I AIM TO CREATE A FACILITY THAT THE COMMUNITY CAN BE PROUD OF. THE LOCAL COMMUNITY‘S INVOLVEMENT AND SUPPORT ARE CRUCIAL AS THEY ADD TO THE SANATORIUM‘S SENSE OF BELONGING AND CONTINUITY. THE INTERACTION WITH AND SUPPORT FROM THE ISLE OF DOGS COMMUNITY WILL HELP FOSTER A NURTURING AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT, ENHANCING THE OVERALL HEALING EXPERIENCE FOR THE RESIDENTS.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS
THE ROLE OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN THE HEALING PROCESS CANNOT BE OVERSTATED. THEIR SUPPORT AND PRESENCE ARE VITAL FOR INDIVIDUALS COPING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESSES. THE SANATORIUM WILL PROVIDE A WELCOMING AND TRANQUIL SPACE FOR FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS TO VISIT AND SPEND TIME WITH THEIR LOVED ONES. BY OFFERING A SERENE ENVIRONMENT, I AIM TO REDUCE THE STRESS AND EMOTIONAL BURDEN ON THESE SUPPORTERS, ENABLING THEM TO CONTRIBUTE POSITIVELY TO THE HEALING PROCESS. THEIR COMFORT AND WELL-BEING ARE INTEGRAL TO THE OVERALL SUCCESS OF THE RESIDENTS‘ RECOVERY JOURNEY.
CARETAKERS AND STAFF
THE WELL-BEING OF CARETAKERS AND STAFF IS CRUCIAL FOR THE EFFECTIVE OPERATION OF THE SANATORIUM. A HEALTHY AND PLEASANT WORK ENVIRONMENT, CREATED THROUGH THE USE OF NATURAL MATERIALS AND A FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY, WILL ENHANCE JOB SATISFACTION AND REDUCE BURNOUT. HAPPY AND HEALTHY STAFF ARE BETTER EQUIPPED TO PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY CARE, DIRECTLY BENEFITING THE RESIDENTS. THEIR DEDICATION AND COMPASSION ARE ESSENTIAL FOR CREATING A SUPPORTIVE AND HEALING ATMOSPHERE, MAKING THEIR ROLE INDISPENSABLE TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROJECT.
RECONNECTIVE HEALING - DESIGN PROPOSAL
CONFRONTING THE MENTAL ASPECT OF HAVING A CHRONIC DISEASE
CONFRONTING THE MENTAL ASPECT OF HAVING A CHRONIC DISEASE
AGENDA:PATIENTS WHO GOT DIAGNOSED WITH CHRONIC DISEASE NEED TO COPE WITH THE MENTAL ASPECT OF THEIR
ILLNESS.
FAMILY/ FRIENDS OF PATIENTS NEED TO HAVE A SPACE TO HANDLE THEIR OWN GRIEF.
STRATEGY:
BRINGING BOTH USERS TOGETHER AND SENSIBEL WORKING ON THEIR SUFFER IN ORDER TO FIND STRENGH AND
ENERGY BACKTO FULLY REST AND RECOVER.
CONCEPT:
THE SANATORIM PROVIDES FACILITIES TO STIMULATE THE SENSES, FIND INNER MINDFULLNESS TO HANDLE LIFE
CHANGING MESSAGES, MATERIALS/ ROOMS AND SPECIFIC CONDITIONS WILL FOLLOW GUIDLINES ON IMPROVING
THE WELBING AND CREATING A SPACETO ESCAPE. CONFRONT AND EXCHANGE.
IN MY ENDEAVOR TO ESTABLISH A SANCTUARY FOR INDIVIDUALS GRAPPLING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESSES, AS WELL AS THEIR CAREGIVERS AND LOVED ONES, I AM DRIVEN BY A PROFOUND COMMITMENT TO FOSTERING A NURTURING ENVIRONMENT CONDUCIVE TO HEALING AND SELF-DISCOVERY. THROUGH THE INNOVATIVE FRAMEWORK OF “RECONNECTIVE HEALING,“ I ASPIRE TO CARVE OUT A SPACE OF PROFOUND AWARENESS WHERE INDIVIDUALS CAN EMBARK ON A TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY TOWARDS HOLISTIC WELL-BEING.
CENTRAL TO THE ETHOS OF THIS PROJECT IS THE NOTION OF RESTORING THE INTRICATE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PHYSICAL BODY AND THE REALM OF EMOTIONS. RECOGNIZING THE PROFOUND IMPACT OF CHRONIC ILLNESS NOT ONLY ON THE AFFLICTED INDIVIDUAL BUT ALSO ON THEIR FAMILIAL AND SOCIAL NETWORKS, I ENDEAVOR TO OFFER A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH THAT ADDRESSES THE MULTIFACETED DIMENSIONS OF HEALING.THE FOUR SENSES TRATMENT IS INTENDED TO ENGAGE THE SENSES AND REIGNITE THE INNATE HEALING POTENTIAL LATENT WITHIN EACH INDIVIDUAL ( BY INTEGRATING TACTILE, AUDITORY, VISUAL, AND OLFACTORY STIMULI).
HOWEVER, TRANSLATING THIS VISION INTO TANGIBLE REALITY HAS NOT BEEN WITHOUT ITS SHARE OF CHALLENGES. THE JUXTAPOSITION OF PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SPACES WITHIN MY ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, WHILE INTENDED TO FOSTER A SENSE OF INTIMACY AND COMMUNAL SUPPORT, POSED LOGISTICAL COMPLEXITIES IN TERMS OF SPATIAL UTILIZATION AND FLOW. BALANCING THE NEED FOR SERENITY AND SECLUSION WITH THE IMPERATIVE OF INCLUSIVITY AND ACCESSIBILITY REQUIRED A DELICATE BALANCING ACT—ONE THAT NECESSITATED ITERATIVE REFINEMENT AND ADAPTATION.
FURTHERMORE, THE SELECTION OF MATERIALS AND THE CURATION OF SENSORY EXPERIENCES EMERGED AS CRITICAL TOUCHSTONES IN CREATING A CONDUCIVE HEALING ENVIRONMENT. WHILE NATURAL ELEMENTS SUCH AS STONE AND WOOD IMBUED A SENSE OF EARTHY WARMTH AND AUTHENTICITY, THE INTEGRATION OF SENSORY STIMULI DEMANDED A NUANCED UNDERSTANDING OF INDIVIDUAL PREFERENCES AND SENSITIVITIES.
MY ETHICAL BELIEFS HELPED ME TO SUPPORT MY PROJECT BUT AT THE SAME TIME THE PROJECT DVELOPED MY ETHICAL AGENDA. AS MY ETHICAL APPROACHES ARE NOT ONLY BASED ON THE ARCHITECTURAL ASPECT BUT ALSO TO CREATE UNRESTRICTED ACCESS TO THE EXCHANGE OF EXPERIENCES WITH CHRONIC ILLNESSES IN EVERYDAY LIFE. FURTHERMORE, I WANT TO NAVIGATE THE EVOLVING LANDSCAPE OF HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS FURTHER AND CULTURE OF INCLUSIVITY AND OPEN DIALOGUE SURROUNDING THE LIVED EXPERIENCE BY OFFERING A PLATFORM FOR CANDID EXCHANGE AND MUTUAL SUPPORT.
SITUATED AT THE HISTORIC EAST INDIA DOCK BASIN, MY PROJECT AIMS TO REPURPOSE THIS UNIQUE LOCATION INTO A SANATORIUM FOR PEOPLE WHO SUFFER OF CHRONIC DISEASES. BY LEVERAGING LEFTOVER MATERIALS FROM A PREVIOUS CONSTRUCTION EFFORT, I INTEND TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE AND HEALTH-CENTRIC ENVIRONMENT THAT PROMOTES WELL-BEING AND RECOVERY FOR ITS USERS. THIS PROJECT IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY AND NATURAL HEALING, UTILIZING RECYCLED AND LOCALLY SOURCED MATERIALS.
MY APPROACH BEGINS WITH A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY. THE FAILED CONSTRUCTION PROJECT AT EAST INDIA DOCK BASIN LEFT BEHIND A VARIETY OF MATERIALS, WHICH I WILL METICULOUSLY RECYCLE AND INTEGRATE INTO THE DESIGN ( SHOWN WITH IN THE COLUMNS MODEL ) BY REPURPOSING THESE MATERIALS, I NOT ONLY REDUCE WASTE BUT ALSO PRESERVE THE HISTORICAL ESSENCE OF THE SITE. THIS PRACTICE ALIGNS WITH MY MISSION TO MINIMIZE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT WHILE CREATING A FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING SPACE.
TO FURTHER ENHANCE THE HEALING ENVIRONMENT OF THE SANATORIUM, I WILL INCORPORATE LIMESTONE FROM PORTLAND AND TIMBER FROM SCOTLAND. BOTH MATERIALS ARE LOCALLY SOURCED, ENSURING EASY TRANSPORTATION AND REDUCING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT. THE NATURAL PROPERTIES OF THESE MATERIALS ARE PARAMOUNT TO THE USER EXPERIENCE, CONTRIBUTING TO A SERENE AND THERAPEUTIC ATMOSPHERE. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT EXPOSURE TO NATURAL MATERIALS CAN SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH, PARTICULARLY FOR THOSE SUFFERING FROM CHRONIC ILLNESSES.
MY GOAL IS FOR RESIDENTS TO FEEL THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF THIS CAREFULLY CURATED ENVIRONMENT DURING THEIR STAY, AIDING IN THEIR LONG-TERM RECOVERY AND HEALTH MAINTENANCE.
MY EXPLORATION CENTERED ON THE IDEA OF INCORPORATING WOOD WASTE INTO STRUCTURAL COLUMNS, AIMING TO NOT ONLY REDUCE WASTE BUT ALSO PROMOTE THE USE OF RENEWABLE RESOURCES. BY UTILIZING LEFTOVERS FROM WOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES, I AIMED TO CONTRIBUTE TO A CIRCULAR ECONOMY WHERE MATERIALS ARE REUSED AND REPURPOSED, RATHER THAN DISCARDED.
MY EXPLORATION OF AMORPHOUS FORMS ALONGSIDE BASIC GEOMETRIC ELEMENTS WAS DRIVEN BY A DESIRE TO CHALLENGE CONVENTIONAL DESIGN PARADIGMS AND PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE IN SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE. BY EMBRACING CONTRASTS AND EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW FORMS, I AIMED TO DEMONSTRATE THAT SUSTAINABILITY AND CREATIVITY ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE BUT RATHER INTERCONNECTED CONCEPTS THAT CAN LEAD TO INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS.
IN CRITIQUING EXISTING ECONOMIC SYSTEMS, MY PROJECT CHALLENGES THE DOMINANCE OF RESOURCE-INTENSIVE MATERIALS AND PROMOTES A MORE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CONSTRUCTION THAT CONSIDERS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS ALONGSIDE ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS.
OVERALL, MY PROJECT IS A REFLECTION OF MY COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY AND MY BELIEF IN THE POWER OF DESIGN TO DRIVE POSITIVE CHANGE. THROUGH MATERIAL EXPERIMENTATION, RECYCLING, AND INNOVATIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES, I STRIVE TO CREATE A BUILT ENVIRONMENT THAT IS NOT ONLY AESTHETICALLY PLEASING BUT ALSO ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE, CONTRIBUTING TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
